Introducing Vaults

Inside a vault

Everything is stored in a vault, which includes all the installed files that Obsidian uses.

You can see all of these on your device.

In the .obsidian folder you will see ‘JSON’ files for settings. There will likely be 1 or all of these folders:

  • Plugins
  • Snippets
  • Themes

Switching between vaults

There are 2 main ways to switch between vaults.

  • Vault Switcher
  • In vault link

But you can have multiple vaults open at any one time. As each vault is unique there can be a different look about each vault.

If a vault is in the recently opened list, you can create a link to open that vault.

Obsidian will look at the list, and find the vault name you search for.

This searches the list: obsidian://vault/
Just add your vault name afterwards.

I use the `-` icon in vault names to make sure the vault can be found by links. Having a space doesn’t work.

Recently opened vault

Once you have opened a vault, the Vault switcher will remember. A list of recently opened vaults will appear on the left side.

Rename Vault

As each vault is a folder you can rename them.

However, just like regular files and folders it can’t be active. So the vault needs to be closed for you to rename it.

Going to the three dot menu in the vault switcher gives you the option, see here:

Delete Vault

The vault folder can be deleted from the vault switcher or the regular documents’ menu on your device.

Vault in a vault

You can ‘nest’ vault folders. A unique .obsidian folder will be given to each. While inside the vault, Obsidian will use the settings from the parent folder. This example has a work ‘parent’ vault, and a personal ‘child’ vault.

Files changed in the ‘nested’ child vault will change in the ‘parent’ vault.

If you are using Obsidian sync it will only sync to the remote vault you have linked with. The child vault will not sync if you are in the parent vault and vice versa.

This is only going to be an issue for child vault syncing. Quicklly opening the vault will activate sync.

Mobile Vault

Vaults on mobile work the same as other devices. The vault switcher is located in a different place.
