Making outlining easier

Core

TfT hackers wrote a great article and shared an outliner video about Obsidian as an Outliner tool.

The main core features that help are:

  • Smart indent – Which adds bullets and numbered lists on enter
  • Tab and shift-tab indent and unindent lines
  • Fold heading – toggles all text underneath a heading
  • Fold indenting – toggles indented text
  • Search folding – shows indented lines in search
  • Hotkeys – Move lines up and down

Look in the editor settings for more information.

Outliner

The Outliner community plugin enhances many of the core features.

It does make the bullets look different.

But the main features include:

  • Can’t delete a bullet – prevents accidental deletion
  • Additional hotkeys
    • Indent the list and sublists
    • Move lists and sublists up
    • Move lists and sublists down
    • Outdent the list and sublists
  • Indentation click options
    • Collapse bullets
    • Zoom – when the plugin is enabled
  • Drag and Drop bullets – This is currently (experimental)

Zoom

The Zoom community plugin lets you focus on a line or heading.

Using the indentation in the outliner can be used for zooming into lines.

But for the heading Zoom, you need to use a hotkey.
